Welcome to My Blog!

Schooling two active boys has never been more... interesting. That's the word I'm looking for! I love my boys! God has given them the blessing of strong, active bodies and minds. We continually pray the first will remain intact, and the second will remain engaged with Him first, and then the school work. You'll meet my sweet sons, both entirely different, but both loving God to the best of their ability in the way He made them. I lovingly refer to them as my Bell Pepper Boy and my Habanero or Hambone. That should say it all! This blog is an eclectic mix. The events, conversations, and the thoughts behind it all will be in here. Every once in a while I'll try to capture something I don't want to forget. I hope you find things you enjoy. Please let me know if you do! Blessings!

If You Give a Mom a Garden. . .

Posted in Mom Things
If you give a mom a garden . . .

She'll want some compost to go in it. And, once she's worked that in to the soil, she'll see it needs more amendment.

Off to the store she'll go, hoping to get a good price on topsoil and peat, too.

While she's at the store, the mom will notice the aisle of shiny tools: shovels and hoes and bulb planters and trowels. She'll have to test each one for weight and durability in her very own hands. After she sees they are not as nice as the heavy tools she has at home, she'll remember she was in the store for the garden she's making.

She'll walk toward the topsoil and peat, and the aisle of fertilizers will be right in front of her. The mom will have to look at the various kinds of fertilizer and think about what she'll need. Knowing there are no plants in the garden yet, she has no need of the fertilizers. But, that reminds her that there are no plants in the garden, so the mom will have to look at those, too!

After the mom experiences *all* of the lovely plants, she remembers she came only for soil amendments. She gets them and pays for them.

When the mom returns to the garden, turns in the amendments, and steps back to look at her job, she is happy. This reminds her that a job well done is really a joy, but also a lot of work.

The mom soon realizes she is thirsty, so she goes in to enjoy the air conditioning and a cup of tea. The tea reminds her she is hungry, so the mom also eats a cookie. The cookie crumbs remind her the kitchen table is dirty, so she finds the spray and paper towels and cleans the table.

Seeing the clean table reminds her there is dirt on the floor, too. So, the mom gets the broom and dust pan and sweeps the dirt from the floor. She dumps the dirt into the garbage can under the sink, which reminds her she was working in dirt earlier in the day in her new garden.

The mom goes back out to the garden, sees there are no flowers, and ponders the situation. Seeing there are flowers in other parts of the yard, the mom decides to move them to the new garden.

Three hours later . . .

The mom steps back from her nicely planted garden, rubs her sore back, looks at the huge pile of extra Brown-Eyed Susans, and thinks, "I really need to make another garden over there with the extra ones."

*sigh*

And, after she has cut the new garden in to the barely grassy area in another part of the yard, she decides she needs some compost to go in it.

Have a great day! This is a bit of a dramatized version of my day. I thought you'd get a kick out of it.

Back to Life. . .Back to Reality. . .

Posted in Mom Things
We are home now. I didn't reveal all, of course, before we left. The internet is rather readable by all sorts of people, you see. You knew that, though.

We went to the Dells. Yes, this is the area that boasts the famous Lake Delton, upon which the Tommy Bartlett show has been performing for years. This is the same lake which drained out of a broken levee just weeks ago. So, yes, we saw where the lake WAS, but there is no lake. It was odd. Plenty of traffic moved along the Wisconsin River, so it's not entirely "boatless" up there. The area didn't look any worse for wear.

It was a great time with family. The water park resort where we stayed was fabulous. Well, unless I start to write about the bed, which was much like sleeping on a warped board the whole night. *sigh* Ignoring that, it was a great trip.

I'm glad to be home to my monsters (pets) who apparently did not allow the house sitter much sleep. Poor guy will probably sleep for a week now after being here for several days. He'll never think his own home is noisy again!  *lol*

Well, I'm trying not to look at the work that needs to be done, so I popped in here. Soon it will be time to feed everyone and everything in the house. Talk to you all soon!

A Little Birdie Told Me

Posted in Mom Things
Some of you know we have a cockatiel. Some of you know my deep feelings for this bird named Sunshine. I'll save my emotions for another day. Anyway. Sunshine is loud for the first daylight hours of every morning. Today is no exception.

Did you ever wonder what a bird who could talk would reveal about your household. I mean, think about it. They only repeat what they hear most often repeated.

Hmmmm.

Sunshine might say some interesting things, including but not limited to "Tastes like chicken!"

It's likely that going further into this entry may be unnecessary sin, so I'll wish you all a wonderful, peaceful, quiet, Sunshine-less weekend!

Various Things Language

Posted in Mom Things
I've been thinking about language things for some reason this week. In all of my deep contemplations, I've come to two conclusions. Let me 'splain.

The first conclusion I've come to is that we have habits we form in language, and some are little oddities I haven't quite grasped. You know them when you hear them. It's a certain way things are said that catches your attention. With your children, you might even make a mental note or a verbal correction.

My example today is from my son who says, consistently, "Lawn the mow." Yes, that's how he says it nearly every time the first time. Sometimes he switches it, but most times he doesn't.

"Mom, is Dad gonna lawn the mow?"
"Did we get a warning because we didn't lawn the mow?"  (That's another story.)
"I'll go pick up the stuff in the yard so we can lawn the mow."

Okay, sweetie.

My second casual contemplation included accents. My dear friends have been kind enough to gently inform me that I (li'l old me) has an accent. While I have no knowledge of said accent, it did make me think for just a moment.

From a teaching perspective, I wondered if accents are the product of phonics confusion. Worse, what would happen to the children in New York, Boston, Oklahoma City, and Chicago, for instance, as they were working through their phonics instruction? Goodness gracious! Some southern words have extra syllables (as in "Yes, ma'am"). Bostonians apparently have liberty in words ending in "a" and words containing "ar" in the middle ("Park the car in Harvard yard" or the name Rebeccar). New York children must have some confusion when it comes to words like "youths" (as evidenced in a film made years ago). No, clearly the Chicago "accent" if you could call it that was the sound in mind when phonics was created. Right?

Now, you all know I'm kidding. And I am, to a degree, but . . . .
