Nov. 18, 2005 5 on 5 reports
We are using Mystery of History2, and I
have asked my kids to do a 5 on 5 report on Ancient Rome. I realize
that this is extra for history, but it satisfies a writng requirement.
A 5 on 5 report is writing on 5 subjects, with each subject having at
least 5 seperate details. Each paragraph should have at least 5
sentences.
For Rome I requested 5 influential people, 5 events, and 5 aspects of
the time era or culture. For example Art, Society, Science, Geography,
Religion. There were a few more that they could choose from, but that
gives you an idea.
So far my only concern is that they don't want to do other schoolwork.
Of course we also made it a contest for who produces a better product.
I should mention the kids ages are 15 and 12. I hope the contest part
doesn't backfire but they realize that one will be choosen over the
other.

Paige wanted to work on map skills and how
to use a compass, so we are doing a mini unit on just that. We will be
putting it into a lapbook format. Some of the things we will be
covering will be lat/longitude, meridians, time zomes, gps, types of
maps, drawing, how to use a compass, a gpsr, and other things I can't
think of right now. We will be doing a few experiments and at least one
field trip to make it fun.

Aug. 26, 2005 A slow start
|
School has started for the big kids this
week. It has been more of a transitional week for the kids. I will be
working on a more strict schedule and ordering some last minute curr
choices. Stay tuned folks its going to be a fun year of learning.

Jul. 7, 2005 Teaching Textbooks and Math-U-See
|
I am thinking of switching to Teaching
Textbooks for high school Algebra. We have been using Math-U-See and
while it has been fine for us and we will continue to use it for
everything prior to Algebra, I like the way Teaching Textbooks is far
more independant for the student. When the student misses a problem
they don't have to come running to me. The student can look up the
missed problem and the software will go aver the problem step by step.

Jul. 7, 2005 Book Hound, book hoard, home library?
|
I love books. My first job out of high
school was in a bookstore, but it started much earlier than that. I
remember going to the public library after school and riding my bike to
the library on Saturdays and checking out the absolute maximum number
of books. So I always wanted alot of books in the home. I think now I
am bordering on to many. Sound impossible? I buy them at yard sales,
used book sales, thrift stores, Costco occasionally, and anywhere there
is a bargain. I have bookshelves in every room. Other homeschoolers
come over just to look at what I have on the shelves, or they say, "Hey
can I see everything you have on Egypt?"

Jul. 5, 2005 Is yesterday a long time ago
|
Sometimes yesterday is a long time ago.
Sometimes tomorrow may never arrive. Today it is summer and I must plan
for a new school year. Some of our school curriculum will change. But
this is the place where you my blogging community and family may peek
in to find out what is happening in our schoolhouse. Right now I am
planning a summer unit on native american crafts, culture, and history.
My 11dd is interested in this right now since she is reading an
american girl series. In fact, her best friend ascross the street has
always wanted to be homeschooled so we will be including her. I told
her Mom it would be homeschooling lite. So if you have any ideas post
em here. We plan to use lapbooking and notebooking, literature, and
lots of hands on stuff.

Jul. 1, 2005 A Long Time Ago
|
In a Land Far Away a long time ago, a
child was born. Her parents didn't know what kind of adventures this
child would create. But the journey and adventures started right away
and have not stopped. At first the parents did not know what to do with
a child, and had to learn the ways of the parent. If the parents knew
what the journey would entail, perhaps they would have screamed in
fear. But the smile of the child blinded the parents to the dangers of
taking the 'parent journey.' |
