Apr. 2, 2006 - Are We Supposed to be Fulfilled At Home?

http://www.crosswalk.com/news/weblogs/mohler/?adate=02/24/2006

I found this article through Ladies Against Feminism.  (http://www.ladiesagainstfeminism.com/)  It's basically about a radical feminist and how she's views stay at home motherhood as unfulfilling and in some ways, morally wrong.  She believes that college educated women are letting feminism down.  URGH!!!

There was one thing that stuck out to me regarding her views of being fulfilled.  And, you know, this is the basic problem with ALL human beings.  In fact, this has seeped into churches across America.  We expect our lives to be fulfilling.  As if life were actually about us.  It's a self-centered point of view and takes God completely out of the picture.

The Westminster Larger Catechism says "What is the chief end of man?"  And answer is. . ."The chief end of man is to glorify God and to fully enjoy HIM forever."  Read that again.  So, if we are seeking to find fulfillment in the jobs that we take on in life, then we are really not reaching our chief end, right?  John Piper teaches it this way. . ."God is most glorified when we are most satisfied in Him."  Um, I didn't hear anything in there sentence about being fulfilled in anything other than in God (and ultimately Christ because they are one in the same.)

Now, don't get me wrong.  I think all of us have something that happens on a daily basis that brings fulfillment.  But if we are looking for that to be the basis of what we are doing then  we are missing the mark.  We shouldn't be wives, mothers, and keepers at home because it's more fulfilling than working a desk job.  In many ways, when we take that approach to this calling of ours, we play on the same level as the radical feminist.  Those who are without God are seeking to find fulfillment in everything BUT God.  That's is the problem with being unsaved.  But when we find salvation our search for fulfillment turns from outside ourselves and on to God.  Or at least it should.  We are NOW to glorify God in the calling He has on our lives.

Linda Hirshman believes that I, as an college educated woman in America, cannot be fulfilled in my role as a stay at home mom and wife.  Well, my answer to Hirshman is that she's missing the mark.  Staying home isn't about me.  It's about the responsibility that God has called me to.  It's about serving a higher Person than myself and being fully satisfied in Him.  And I am.

What is your chief end, dear homeschoo mom?  To glorify God.  Make much of Jesus.  I am going to include the lyrics to a Steven Curtis Chapman song called "Much of You".  Oh, I LOVE this song.  It so reflects my heart's desire right now.

 Much of You

How could I stand here
And watch the sun rise
Follow the mountains
Where they touch the sky
Ponder the vastness
And the depths of the sea
And think for a moment
The point of it all was to make much of me
Cause I'm just a whisper
And You are the thunder and

I want to make much of You, Jesus
I want to make much of Your love
I want to live today to give You the praise
That You alone are so worthy of
I want to make much of Your mercy
I want to make much of Your cross
I give You my life
Take it and let it be used
To make much of You

And how can I kneel here
And think of the cross
The thorns and the whip and the nails and the spear
The infinite cost
To purchase my pardon
And bear all my shame
To think I have anything worth boasting in except for Your name
Cause I am a sinner
And You are the Savior

I want to make much of You, Jesus
I want to make much of Your love
I want to live today to give You the praise
That You alone are so worthy of
I want to make much of Your mercy
I want to make much of Your cross
I give You my life
Take it and let it be used

To make much of You

This is Your love, oh God
Not to make much of me
But to send Your own son
So that we could make much of You

For all eternity

I want to make much of You Jesus
I want to make much of Your love
I want to live today to give You the praise
That You alone are so worthy of
I want to make much of Your mercy
I want to make much of Your cross
I give You my life
Take it and let it be used
To make much of You

I want to make much of You
Much of You Jesus

Wow! I'm so glad you stopped by my blog, because now I've found yours. What an encouraging post, as is your one about being comfortable. You spoke to my heart. I really think this is a great blog. I will be back to check it out.
Thanks too for your post and info about Beautiful Feet. I have looked into it and I may try to use some of it for this year.
Oh yeah, my daughters are also 6 and 3. We plan on having more if God wills it, but so far these are my blessings.

Blessings,
Sommer
