You've got to keep the tot busy...

Building with Smart Shapes by Lauri
These are great for teaching shapes, colors, sorting, and numbers in quantity (the Rightstart way!). Simon also loves to build with them. The shapes fit in to the main piece like a puzzle, too, so you get some fine motor action going on as well. I like them because I can use them as a tool one-on-one with Simon, or he can just experiment with them all by himself.
Simon tried something new with them this week (which is why I grabbed the camera); he stacked the shapes up on each other.

Lots of trial and error to get the tower to stack right, but he hung in there and did it!

Here's another fun sorting activity I've had since Elijah was a tot. The first time I had Simon do this (a few months ago), I thought he was doing it wrong, but as I stepped back (instead of telling him he was wrong and) watched, I realized that he just does things differently! He instinctively sorts by animal instead of color. What a great reminder to me to not rush in to teach him the "right way" to do things.

As for other things we did this week- nature walks, apple orchard, caramel apples, tea-time with poetry, stories, and markers (notice the green on his forehead and the red on his arm!).
Happy Tot-schooling!

Dec. 10, 2007 - Eek! There's a toddler in my couch!
I know, I know...every mother thinks their child is the cutest...But, this little Simon guy is really CUTE! Not just in the way he looks (that's SO obvious), but the things he does. Too cute.

Dec. 6, 2007 - Simon's Wish List
All Simon wants for Christmas is a crock-pot...
P.S. Yes, mom, that's yours! I'm sorry! We'll have to move it out of the entry way and to some other "safe" spot.

Aug. 23, 2007 - School for Simon
What do you do with a 15 month old who WANTS to do school? You put him in a chair and give him something to do! Isn't he CUTE!?
For my family members (who live far away), I'd like to give you some Simon updates:He says please in sign language and he is passionate about it using both hands and rubbing his tummy and his chest! He also says more. When daddy walks through the door, you can usually find Simon waiting at the gate making both signs (more, please! MORE DADDY!)
Simon-language
ap = apple
cup = cup (it's more like c-uuuuuuuuuuuuu-p)
bub = Elijah
dog = any animal
ha-i = hi
hah-ho! = ought oh
He loves to walk backwards!
He eats with a fork.
He likes hot salsa, salt and vinegar chips, and LOVES watermelon.
He is building with the Megablocks.
He loves baths and loves to be naked.
He has a sudden fascination for books-- especially Polar Bear, Polar Bear What Do You Hear?
He likes to growl as I read the polar bear book.
He loves music.

Jul. 21, 2007 - Oh, Simon!
It's so great to have a kid who will eat his veggies...apparently, that's not all he's hungry for...
Maybe we shouldn't be so harsh on our other child, the picky eater.
