Great Outdoors

Recently, I wrote an article for The Homeschool Quest Magazine. I really enjoyed creating 3 math-related outdoor activities. I think children need to see more fun activities for math and the outdoors. Here is the link for the entire magazine.

Equal Recipients: God’s Unbiased Distribution

In the grand tapestry of God’s love, grace, and mercy, there is no partiality. God loves each of us equally and unconditionally. As recipients of His boundless affection, we are called to mirror His example in our interactions. The biblical truth in Galatians 3:28 resonates – there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female; all are one in Christ Jesus. God’s love knows no distinctions or biases. When we distribute the love He has bestowed upon us, let us emulate His impartiality, ensuring every individual receives their share of His grace. So, when you have to distribute a number in math, remember God wants us to love as He has loved you. Make sure every term gets an equal amount of love.

Life’s Angles: A Mathematical Reflection

“In the same way, let your light shine before others so that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16
In the realm of mathematics, angles can be metaphors for the different times in our lives. We often veer away from what is right and good, allowing our paths to be shaped by our own will. When we succumb to pride and overindulgence, we mirror an obtuse angle – over the top and lacking humility. On the other hand, when fear and doubt hinder us from following God’s will, we resemble an acute angle, folding in and withholding God’s love from the world. The aspiration is to be at the right angle and live a righteous life. It involves an unwavering commitment to follow God’s will at all costs. Just as a right angle is balanced and, aligning our lives with God’s purpose allows us to radiate His love to others. So, let us strive to be the right angle in life’s intricate geometry, acknowledging our angles’ imperfections and holding fast to the power of following God’s will with unwavering faith and dedication.

Input and Output of an Equation: Understanding Domain and Range in God’s Sovereignty

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5 – 6
In the realm of language, “domain” signifies dominion or territory under a sovereign ruler. Think of it as the x-value, the independent variable. Now, associate this x with God’s direction in your heart and life. When we invite God into our hearts, we willingly concede dominion, making our hearts His domain. Consider the range linked to the y-axis, the dependent variable. In the grand equation of life, we are
reliant on God’s guidance through His Word. Following His direction yields the desired outcomes He has envisioned for our lives. So, as we delve into the concepts of Domain and Range, let’s not forget that our hearts are now God’s domain. We are intricately woven into the fabric of His plan, and by surrendering to His rule, we align ourselves with God’s mathematics, where every variable finds purpose in His sovereign design.

Beyond Mean, Median, and Mode – God’s Grace is a Gift, Just Receive It

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith- and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9
In the arithmetic of life, some believe in a cosmic balance sheet, hoping their good deeds will outweigh the bad, granting them passage through heaven’s gates. However, God’s calculus isn’t a mere tallying of deeds; it demands perfection. God, being holy, requires 100% goodness, a feat unattainable by human efforts alone. We can only stand before God because of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. The mean, often equated with averaging, suggests we can tip the scales in our favor. Yet, God’s standard transcends human calculations. Only through Jesus, who intercedes between our imperfections and God’s holiness, can we find the perfection required for heavenly dwelling. Consider the median, akin to the mean but with a twist – canceling out good and bad deeds until only one number remains. Living in uncertainty, hoping this result secures our place in heaven, is a fearful existence. Thankfully, we don't have to live in such uncertainty. Through Jesus, we can know with certainty that we stand cleansed before God. Another misconception is finding a mode, a singular skill or attribute, to pave our way to heaven. Yet, even a mode of all good deeds falls short. It’s not our merits but Jesus who enables us to stand before God as His children. By inviting Him into our hearts, we secure a place in God’s kingdom, not through a collection of good deeds but through a relationship with the Savior. God’s calculus is not about hoping we’ve done enough or excelling in a single skill. It’s about acknowledging our need for a Savior, recognizing Jesus as the bridge between our imperfections and God’s holiness. In this certainty, we find peace, knowing that our place in God’s kingdom is secured not by our efforts but by His grace.

Eternal Love: God’s Circle of Endless Devotion

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” Rev. 22:13
In the realm of shapes, the circle stands as a symbol of eternity, with no beginning or end. Similarly, God embodies the essence of a circle, and His love for us is boundless, surpassing our comprehension. The enormity of God’s love may be challenging for us to grasp, but the cross serves as a poignant reminder. In that sacred symbol, we witness the extent of His sacrificial love, reaching from the past to the future.
Revelation 22:13 echoes this eternal nature, declaring God as the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, encompassing the beginning and the end. His love, like a continuous circle, spans across all dimensions of time and space. As we study the symbolism of the circle and absorb the depth of God’s love revealed on the cross, may we find peace in the eternal nature of His devotion. Let the unbroken circle of His love guide us, assuring us that His love knows no bounds and has no end.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1

Embarking on life’s journey with God, we often find ourselves grappling with the manner in which He responds to our prayers. We become fixated on our expectations, oblivious to the broader canvas that God paints. His answers may take the form of a single solution, no solution, or infinite possibilities. To discern His will, we must be still and know that He is God.
Rather than attempting to shoulder the responsibility, let’s shift our focus to understanding our unique role in God’s plan. Listening becomes paramount. Surrendering to God’s wisdom, we discover that our journey unfolds in a way that is distinctly yours. Stop trying to do God’s job and listen to what God wants your job to be. It will be uniquely yours.

Inscribed: A Message from The Hand of God

“In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.” James 2:17 – 18
Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. To inscribe means to write on, to engrave for duration, and in the tapestry of our existence, God’s inscriptions hold profound significance. In the sacred scriptures, we discover the intimate gesture of God inscribing our names on the palm of His hand, signifying a lasting connection and unwavering remembrance. However, not all inscriptions bear good news. In the days of Daniel, the hand of God inscribed a divine message on the wall for Belshazzar, Nebuchadnezzar’s son. The inscriptions were not ones of favor:
“Mene: God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end.
Tekel: You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting.
Peres: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.”
These inscriptions serve as poignant reminders of accountability and the consequences of one’s actions. The inscription on Belshazzar’s wall encapsulates a moment of harsh judgment, illustrating the weightiness of accountability in the grand scheme of God’s plan.
As we reflect on the concept of inscribing, let us be mindful of the lasting impact of our actions and choices. When we choose God, we choose life. May our lives bear inscriptions that align with the grace and love of God, for His divine penmanship shapes not only our present but also our eternal destiny.

Basic Transformations: Becoming New by Surrendering to God’s Transformative Power

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing, and perfect will.”
Romans 12:2
God’s desire is to reshape us, to make us new. When we accept Him as our Lord and Savior, inviting Him into our hearts, a transformative process begins – we become new creations, shedding the old. However, this renewal goes beyond a one-time event; it’s a continuous journey. As Christians, we are called to distance ourselves from worldly thinking. God invites us to surrender our minds to His transformative power, aligning our thoughts with God’s perspective. The transformation extends beyond personal growth; it’s a call to reflect God in our lives, becoming vessels through which the world can witness His grace and love. In a world shrouded in darkness, we carry the responsibility of being the embodiment of Jesus. We may
be the only representation of Him that someone ever encounters. Thus, our transformed lives become a testament to His power, offering a glimpse of His light in a world in need. So, let us embrace the ongoing transformation God initiates within us. In reflecting His character, we become beacons of His love, hope, and grace – a living testament to the transformative power of accepting Jesus into our hearts.

Navigating Faith: Laws of Detachment and Syllogism in Our Connection to God

“Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of
Jesus.” Hebrews 10:19
In the intricate landscape of faith, the Laws of Detachment and Syllogism weave a tapestry that unfolds the profound nature of our connection to God. The Law of Detachment, which posits that if our statement about God is true and our hypothesis holds, then our conclusion is also true, resonates deeply in the spiritual realm.
Building upon this, the Law of Syllogism introduces a transference of truths. In the Old Testament, the Israelites approached God through a high priest, a relationship bound by certain rules but not a true syllogism. However, with Jesus, a transformative shift occurs. If we accept the truth that we have a direct line to Jesus and another truth that through Jesus, we boldly go before God, then, by the Law of
Syllogism, we can conclude that without Jesus, we have no relationship with God.
The connection deepens as we realize that the transference from a system of intermediaries to a direct line through Jesus reshapes our spiritual equation. The profound truth that a relationship with God is only possible through Jesus becomes the cornerstone of our faith. So, in this spiritual journey, let us embrace the Laws of Detachment and Syllogism, understanding that our connection to God is not only rooted in truth but also transferred and strengthened through the transformative power of Jesus. With Him as our mediator, we navigate the complexities of faith with the assurance that our relationship with God is not just a hypothesis but a profound reality.
