How We’ve Been Homeschooling

If you count the year my oldest son was preschool age, we have been homeschooling since the fall of 2006. That is just so hard to believe we have been doing this for so long. That would mean this upcoming fall of 2021 we will be starting our 15th year of homeschooling (if I’m counting correctly). When we started this journey, my oldest was 4, my second son was about 18 months and my twins were not even thought of yet.

We have tried so many different styles and curriculum choices through the years. I have tried traditional textbooks, Charlotte Mason, a unit study/combo with other styles, but more or less we had been categorized as eclectic. This past year we had decided to go with an online choice from a long-time homeschool publisher. I had done some trials with this and the boys seemed to like it and it worked ok. Some of my thinking with this was that they enjoy technology, it would keep them working at a steady pace with things, exc. Boy, was I wrong.

I have not mentioned the company/curriculum because I think it could be a great fit for some. It’s solid, it’s Biblical. For my boys, it led to a lot of laziness, and procrastination. I would meet with them and happily send them off to do their work and shortly when I start checking on them they were doing other things online besides school. It’s a battle I have fought so many different ways this school year. So that’s why I feel like it’s a problem with my family, not the curriculum and I don’t want to give it a bad name.

So we are finishing off the school year with a couple of subjects online but they are back to doing math, language arts and science with me. It just works better for us.

I must finish this off my stating I am so excited to start planning the next school year! I am more excited about it in fact than I have been in many, many years. I plan for my next post to be all about what is coming up on the horizon for the 21-22 school year. So check back with me soon and we will look at curriculum and planning. See you soon!
