How We’ve Dove Into The School Year

We got started with our 2021-2022 school year a few weeks ago, and so far, things are going pretty well. We did take a few days last week for a camping adventure as well. At least the boys and their dad did. This momma stayed home and had a break.

Back to the school topic. We made some major curriculum changes this school year, and so far, they are working pretty well. They seem to be challenging but achievable so far. Before I list our books, though, I want to point out that we are really trying to stick closer to a schedule this year though. We have started and stunk at keeping schedules for years, but on the flip side, just a loose routine or a more relaxed vibe just doesn’t work well for my family. WE GET NOTHING DONE WHEN THAT HAPPENS! The days when the schedule is kept closer to are our best and more productive. This may be a point that is much the opposite for your family, and that is truly the beauty of homeschooling in that we can do what works for our family. Trust me, after doing this for 15 years (starting fall of 2006), I can see the trends in me and my kids. So my twins and I do better going with the schedule. My 16-year-old doesn’t like to cooperate with it as well, but we are getting there. I try to give him more wiggle room due to his job, but he needs the structure.

A sampling of our curriculum for the 2021-2022 school year.

For momma’s planning purposes, I’m using the Well Planned Day planner.

For my 13-year-old twins, who are in 8th grade:

Language Arts: Language Arts Core Skills for 8th grade, Writing and Rhetoric (Book 4 this semester and Book 5 next semester), Poetry for the Grammar Stage, Poetry & Short Stories, Print Handwriting Workbook for Teens (because it’s gotten sloppy).

Math: Prealgebra from College of the Redwoods. We are doing it through PDF, and I have the solutions manual, and we print off what we need. So far, it’s working out well.

History: Book of Ancient Greeks, Book of Ancient World. We are supposed to add in The Odyssey and The Illiad later in the school year.

Christian Studies: Book 4 from Memoria Press. Through the Bible overview.

Science: Exploring the World of Physics. I believe this is just a one-semester course, so we will probably do the Chemistry one in the same series next semester.

Latin: First Form Latin from Memoria Press

For my 16-year-old 11th grade son.

Language Arts: Language Lessons for the Secondary Child and Print Handwriting Workbook for Teens

Math: Christian Light Algebra

History/Bible/Literature: Notgrass Exploring America

Science: Behold the Heavens Astronomy/Physics

That’s basically it. If you have any questions about any of that, please let me know.

So not to be too overwhelming, I will finish this off there. I will post again soon about our homeschool co-op and plans for the oldest son. Thanks for reading.

  1. Thank you for sharing your curriculum choices. I have never seen some of these titles before, and I am especially curious about the Print Handwriting Workbook for Teens! 😉 I did not know such a thing existed!
