Well, there you are! Let’s begin this new week together in a way that will bring us “good success”! (Josh. 1:8) 📖🌻☕
We are starting off this Monday morning with a reading in 1 Timothy–“grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ”. Our scripture writing passage is Phil. 4:4-7 (familiar territory for some of you who have been with me for some months…we memorized this together).
Our “flourishing” includes rejoicing, moderation, thanksgiving, prayer–and God’s peace will guard our hearts and our minds. Speaking of which, we are memorizing Psalm 103:1-18 this week, and it is clear that these many “benefits” David lists are contingent upon having a relationship with God. Many mentions in this psalm of those who keep his ways, seek righteousness, fearing God, keeping his covenant, remembering his commandments to do them.
Streams in the Desert takes us way back to Genesis, to see “Evidence of His Love”–“God knows just when to withhold from us any visible sign of encouragement, and when to grant us such a sign. How good it is that we may trust Him anyway!” Tozer in the Morning reminds us that “God’s Grace Is Eternal”–“Immutability is an attribute of God; therefore God at all times and in all of history must act like Himself!”
Spurgeon in Faith’s Checkbook writes about “Care of Our Feet”–“He will keep our feet from wandering so that we do not go into paths of error, or ways of folly, or courses of the world’s custom”. Have you ever read “Hinds’ Feet on High Places”? Our prayer scripture from our list at His Mercy Is New is Psalm 112:1,6-8a. Fearing the Lord, delighting in His commandments, no fear, a fixed heart, trusting in the Lord–these things will help us begin this new year well.
Today we close with “Backsliding”, reading by permission from The Valley of Vision, our little book of Puritan prayers and devotionals from the good folks at Banner of Truth. “I have been greatly distressed of soul because I did not suitably come to the fountain that purges away all sin”–isn’t that always the pattern? Instructive to my heart today.
