Hey, it’s good to have you back here with me on this Maundy Thursday. I’d never looked up the origin of the term, since it is not typically used in Baptist churches. It is an interesting study, and the day can include the practice of foot washing, a focus on the commandment of Jesus to “love others as I have loved you”, or a belief in a connection to the practice of begging alms. Some denominations have a special service on this day including communion in commemoration of The Last Supper which took place on the Thursday of Easter week. Revelation 11 is the reading for today per our schedule as we finish reading through the New Testament in a year. We are writing Romans 8:6-8 from our Spiritual Warfare list from The Ruffled Mango, and we practice Matthew 5:3-9 again.
Streams in the Desert, appropriate for Easter week, concerns “Resurrection Hope” this morning–“A soldier said, “When I die do not sound taps over my grave, but reveille, the morning call, the summons to rise.”
Tozer writes about “The Cure”–“Because Jesus Christ died, because He was God and because He was man, His atonement was absolutely and fully efficacious. All of the attributes of God are on the side of the person who confesses his or her sin and turns and runs to the feet of Jesus.”
Spurgeon, in Faith’s Checkbook, speaks of the freedom found in declaring, “My Choice Is His Choice”–“If others dispute the sovereignty of the Lord, and glory in the freewill of man, do thou answer them, “He shall choose for me.” It is my freest choice to let Him choose. As a free agent, I elect that He should have absolute sway.”
We close with Proverbs 24:3 as our prayer scripture, along with a companion verse in Colossians as we consider our role as influencers for the gospel in the world. “Grace Active” is the title for our reading from The Valley of Vision.
Tomorrow, instead of closing with a hymn text, we’ll close with a special poem appropriate for Good Friday.
Looking forward to having you with me!
