First, let me address the wisdom of self care.
Self care (I’m not talking about shopping sprees and getaways at luxurious spa resorts) is biblical. To do what is needful in order to bring peace and focus back into our lives is a good thing. In the gospel of Mark, on the heels of receiving the devastating news of the death of John the Baptist, we find this:
And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.” Mark 6:31
Their days were rigorous. As the fame of the Lord Jesus grew, the multitudes increased. Some were seeking healing or food as a result of the news of His miracles. Others craved the Good News.
Jesus saw that the disciples were spent. He knew what tiredness felt like, as well as hunger. And now they were bearing the weight of such terribly heavy news. It was time to come apart.
It isn’t noble to wear yourself to a frazzle, mama. I have a very strong work ethic, and it’s taken me years to arrive at this conclusion. When we start pushing and wearing ourselves thin, we often wear thin emotionally and spiritually as well. Our faith becomes frail and our spirit becomes fragile.
One of the things I’ve done to help with this is journaling. I’ve done everything from using bargain spiral notebooks to pretty hardbound blank journals to journaling Bibles. Writing scripture, writing out prayers, writing observations about what I’m reading.
I love this new series in particular, and the most recent addition is one based on the Psalms and is my favorite!
The combination of art and logic has a way of centering the brain, and the coloring portions are therapeutic while focusing the mind on scripture. In the example pages above, I used Psalm 18:2 as my inspiration.
