Things were looking bleak…I was down to one pair of jeans that fit me comfortably. Now they are too big (except sort of when I pull them right out of the dryer), and I’m “outgrowing” others as well. Let me tell you about my anti-WW story.
I’ve been on a weight loss journey over the past couple of decades. Four abdominal surgeries, battles with various autoimmune conditions, stress…all took their toll. Long decades. Lots of trial and error. Lots of costly supplements, shakes, programs. Lots of unsustainable experimentation. Yo-yo up, and yo-yo down.
I never thought I’d consider Weight Watchers. I wanted something that looked cooler. I wanted something that sounded trendy and not like I was trying to lose weight. lol Problem was, no matter how trendy things looked or how un-weight-loss-ish they sounded, none of them did the trick for me. Honestly, this was as much about health “gain” as it was about weight “loss”.
A friend of mine was trying Weight Watchers and there was a special promo for a free 30 days for anyone she invited. I figured there wasn’t anything to lose, right? Well, except some weight hopefully!
Y’all this was not what I imagined at all. This ain’t your mama’s Weight Watchers. I fell in love with the app, which tracks:
- Activity (can be paired with devices…I have it tracking the pedometer app on my iPhone)
- Water Intake
- Sleep
- And of course, your points (units assigned to food items based on a number of factors like carb and fat content)
There are incentives ranging from the opening screen (which said “You’re better than bubble wrap, Diane!” today 😁) to Weight Loss Milestone charms (I have two so far, and another on the way!) to WellnessWins (rewards that can be purchased with points accumulated for various tasks). I just found out I’m eligible for a 90-day Sam’s Club Membership with my current total of WellnessWins!
There is all kinds of encouragement available on the app as well, from coaching and wellness classes to blog articles to exercise programs. Through Connect, you can also chat with others in groups who have things in common with you, on their own platform.
One of my favorite things is the bar code scanner, which will scan any item in your pantry (or on the shelf while you are shopping) and let you know how many points each serving is worth. Another neat option is the “What’s in your fridge?” option, where you enter what you have on hand and the app will suggest recipes!
You are never alone in the journey, and never need to feel stuck or that you will fail because you don’t have “special food” or pricey products on hand. If you want a splurge, you can factor it into your points.
Tonight we are having fettucini with bolognese sauce and garlic bread and I’ll have a decent sized portion (not a wimpy “what’s the point” sample!). And I’ve lost almost 17 pounds since I started in late June. This works. It’s completely doable.
